– San Luis Obispo Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on May 4, in the 500 block of Higuera between the hours of 7 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

Two arrested for robbery

–On Tuesday at about 2 p.m., Grover Beach Police Officers were dispatched to reported fight occurring at a convenience store parking lot located in the 1100 block of West Grand Avenue. Upon arrival, they contacted a 20-year-old male victim who reported he was attacked and robbed by two known adult male assailants. The suspects beat the victim with their hands and stole the victim’s backpack containing numerous items of personal property. The victim sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention.

Officers and Detectives were able to gather enough information to identify the suspects as 18-year-old Preston J. Sharf and 28-year-old Randy B. Danks, Jr., both from Arroyo Grande. During the course of the investigation, the suspects were located at separate residences near the crime location and both were taken into custody without incident. The victim’s property was recovered after it was turned into the police department by two uninvolved juveniles.

Both Mr. Sharf and Mr. Danks have been booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on felony Robbery charges. County’s Most Wanted: Robert Anthony Martinez Captured

—The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office’s has arrested Robert Anthony Martinez, 76, a wanted felon who had an arrest warrant for possession of child pornography. Martinez was arrested Thursday, May 10 in Cayucos after deputies received a tip from the public. Martinez had previously been featured in the Sheriff’s Office’s “Most Wanted” list.

–On Thursday at about 4:45 a.m., a citizen called the Grover Beach Police Department to report a suspicious person walking through a residential neighborhood looking into vehicles. The caller gave a specific description of the person and a few minutes later a police officer located someone matching the description in the 1200 block of West Grand Avenue. During the officer’s contact with the man, they determined he was in possession of narcotics and a stolen semi-auto pistol. The man, 18-year-old Raymond Lopez from Arroyo Grande, was taken into custody without incident. Lopez was found to be in possession of over an ounce of marijuana and an ounce of methamphetamine in addition to drug paraphernalia indicating narcotics sales. Lopez is a previously convicted felon and documented gang member.

Lopez has been booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on multiple felony charges to include:

  • PC 25850(c)(3)- Gang Member Carrying a Concealed Firearm
  • PC 25850(c)(6)- Loaded Firearm not registered to Person in Possession
  • PC 30305(a)(1)- Felon in Possession of Ammunition
  • PC 29800(a)(1)- Addict in Possession of a Firearm
  • PC 496(a)- Possession of Stolen Property, PC 186.22(a)- Participation in Criminal Street Gang
  • PC 21310- Possession of a Dirk or Dagger
  • H&S 11370.1- Possession of a Loaded Firearm and Drugs
  • H&S 11378- Possession of Methamphetamine for Sale
  • H&S 11359(b)- 18 years or older Possession of Marijuana for sale
  • H&S 11364- Possession of Narcotic Smoking Device.

Transient arrested for possession of child pornography

–In March, Detectives with the Sheriff’s Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) team received a tip that child pornography had been downloaded at an unidentified location in San Luis Obispo County. A subsequent investigation led Detectives to a suspect identified as 36-year-old Joshua Jackson, who is currently a registered sex offender.

On May 10, detectives located Jackson and served a search warrant at the motel where he was staying in the 1400 block of Calle Joaquin in San Luis Obispo.

Detectives seized a laptop and a cellphone and that equipment will be forensically analyzed for child pornography. The investigation discovered several thousand images of child pornography in Jackson’s online storage account. At this time, there is no evidence Jackson was involved in the manufacturing of the child pornography.

Jackson was arrested on one count of possessing child pornography. He was taken into custody without incident. The investigation continues.

Three arrested for possession of narcotics, weapons, stolen property

–On Tuesday at approximately 7 a.m. Morro Bay Police Department and San Luis Obispo County Narcotic Task Force served a Narcotic Search Warrant on a Morro Bay home located in the 2300 block of Hemlock Ave. For several weeks Morro Bay officers have been investigating reported drug activity at the residence. After a detailed investigation and obtaining a search warrant for the residence, members of the Morro Bay Police Department were joined by members of the SLO County Narcotic Task Force and the SLO County Sheriff K9 division to execute the warrant.

Upon serving the search warrant numerous firearms and other illegal weapons were located inside the residence, along with extensive evidence of illegal drug activity and drug sales. Three people were arrested for involvement in the illegal activities.

25-year-old Robert Hurless was arrested for:

Possession of controlled substance for sale
Possession of controlled substance while armed with a firearm
Possession of stolen property
Possession of Nunchaku
Possession of illegal switchblade knife
Possession of metal knuckles.

51-year-old Brook Gaughan was arrested for:
Possession of a controlled substance
Maintaining a residence for unlawful activity.

33-year-old Paul DeFalco was arrested for:
Possession of a controlled substance for Sale

Officers recovered approximately 163 grams of Methamphetamine, over 270 grams of processed Marijuana, and US currency believed to be from narcotic sales.

Additional Illegal Narcotic items and illegal Armor Piercing Ammunition were also located within the residence and additional charges will be filed with the SLO County District Attorney’s office.

All three parties were booked into the San Luis Obispo County jail on the above-listed charges. Seven sentenced to prison for home invasion in Atascadero

–Yesterday, each of the seven defendants between the ages of 27 and 48-years-old were sentenced for their criminal involvement in a home invasion robbery in Atascadero on Feb. 11. Six of the defendants were sentenced to 5-years in state prison for two counts of home invasion robbery in concert with another person with an enhancement for being armed with a firearm. The seventh defendant, Joseph M. Perry, has been sentenced to 9-years and 8-months in state prison for two counts of home invasion robbery in concert and an enhancement for personally carrying a handgun during the robbery.

“This prison sentence sends a loud and clear message to anyone coming into our community to commit crime: you are not welcome to commit your crimes in San Luis Obispo County,” said District Attorney Dan Dow. “We have zero tolerance and will vigorously prosecute serious and violent crimes like these to ensure our community is safe. I want to thank Atascadero Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office for their outstanding investigation that led to the arrest of these seven violent criminals.”

On Feb. 11, 2017, seven masked/hooded individuals enter an Atascadero residence, tying up its inhabitants, and holding them at gunpoint. The individuals took, by use of physical force and fear, approximately $139,000 in cash and an estimated 885 pounds of marijuana from the residence. After the individuals fled the scene in two vehicles, they were contacted and apprehended by Atascadero Police Department officers. They were found with large amounts of marijuana, cash, and at least one firearm.

The sentence was imposed by the Honorable Craig van Rooyen in Department 7 of the Superior Court.

The case was investigated by the Atascadero Police Department, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, and the District Attorney Bureau of Investigations. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Kristy Imel and Nick Quincey.

Man arrested after high-speed police chase through North County

–On Wednesday at approximately 11:17 a.m., an officer from the Atascadero Police Department initiated a vehicle stop on a Harley Davidson motorcycle in the area of Olmeda and Rosario Avenues in Atascadero, for vehicle code violations. The rider failed to yield to the officer and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The motorcyclist left city limits and reached speeds of 100 MPH when headed eastbound on Highway 41 toward Creston. Officers requested an airship and patrol units from the California Highway Patrol to assist in the pursuit.

The pursuit ultimately terminated in the 7900 block of Highway 229 when the rider lost control and crashed. The rider was taken into custody. Medical aid was requested due to minor injuries to the rider’s shoulder and ankle from the collision. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

The motorcycle had been reported stolen to the Atascadero Police Department in November of 2017. The rider was identified as Maysen Darrell Gable, age 23, a San Miguel resident. Gable was transported to a local area hospital for medical treatment prior to being booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail for the charges of felony evading an officer, possession of a stolen vehicle and having a suspended license.

Shoplifting suspect arrested after attempting to flee on foot

–On Thursday May 17 at 2:50 p.m., Atascadero Police Officers responded to a shoplifting call at Smart & Final Grocery Store in Atascadero. As police arrived on the scene, they located a suspect matching the description. The suspect fled on foot. A perimeter was established in the area of Curbaril, Sinaloa and Santa Ysabel Avenues. During the pursuit, the suspect was reported to be armed with a knife. The APD K-9 unit and an Airship from the California Highway Patrol were requested to respond. Once the Airship and the K-9 unit arrived on scene, a search began at the 8900 block of Curbaril and the suspect was located in a nearby backyard. He refused to comply with officers commands and the K-9 was successfully deployed. The suspect was taken into custody and treated by medics. The suspect’s name cannot be released at this time, according to police.

County’s Most Wanted: Suspect Chelsea Deperna captured

Chelsea Deperna, the County’s Most Wanted subject from Jan. 11, was arrested on Apr. 16 by the Mojave County Sheriff’s Office.

She was wanted for failure to appear for manufacture of controlled substance.

Chelsea Ann Deperna, 34, is wanted for failure to appear on charges of manufacturing a controlled substance, ID theft with an enhancement for committing a felony while released on bail, and driving a car without consent with an enhancement for committing a felony with a prior prison term for a felony within five years.

Atascadero woman arrested after attempting to evade police

–On Monday, at 8:54 p.m., an officer located a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the 5500 block of El Camino Real. A traffic stop was attempted on the vehicle but the driver fled, making several evasive maneuvers to avoid being stopped. After a short pursuit, the vehicle collided with another vehicle in the intersection of Traffic Way and Lewis Ave.

It was determined the driver, Alexis Cheshire, a 20-year-old female from Atascadero, had been operating her vehicle under the influence of alcohol and with a suspended driver license. Cheshire was taken into custody and booked at county jail for felony driving under the influence of alcohol with injury, felony evading a police officer, driving while suspended and possession of an open container. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a local area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Man found in possession of 7 stolen Iphones

–On May 26, 2018 in the afternoon hours, the San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) received a call regarding a theft in progress at the Apple Store, 899 Higuera. The caller told dispatchers a male subject entered the store, stole a display model phone and was last seen running east on Higuera from the store. The caller provided a physical description of the subject. A SLOPD bicycle officer was patrolling the downtown area and saw a subject matching the description running near the intersection of Marsh and Osos. After a short foot-pursuit the officer arrested the subject who was later identified as 20-year-old Elk Grove resident Aaron Searcy.

Searcy was found to be in possession of 7 stolen Iphones that had security alarms sounding. He was positively identified by the caller and the Apple Store’s video surveillance. The phones were later returned to the Apple Store and the combined value was determined to be over $7,500.

During the investigation officers contacted Apple’s regional loss prevention team and discovered Searcy was responsible for several similar thefts throughout Nevada and California during 2017-2018 (loss estimated to be over $90,000). A bail enhancement was granted by a San Luis Obispo Superior Court Judge and set for the amount of $500,000. Searcy was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Robert Anthony Martinez, 76, is wanted for failing to appear in court for possession of child pornography.

If he looks familiar, that’s because Martinez was the County’s Most Wanted subject on May 9. He was arrested the very next day after a tip from the public. He made bail and was released from custody.

But this time, just three weeks later, he is the County’s Most Wanted subject because he failed to show up for his court appearance on those child porn charges.

Martinez is White, 5′ 09″ tall, 195 pounds and his last known address is in Morro Bay.

Paso Robles man in custody after attempting to flee police by foot

37-year-old Paso Robles resident Justin Lee Ladd.

–On Wednesday, at 3:25 p.m., officers of Atascadero Police Department Special Enforcement team observed a wanted subject in the area of Vons Shopping Center. When they attempted contact with the subject, he fled on foot, through a business and onto Santa Ysabel Ave.

Officers established a perimeter and requested assistance from the CHP Air Ship. Following an intensive search, the subject was located in a Garage in the 700 block of Santa Ysabel and was taken into custody without further incident.

The subject was identified as 37-year-old Paso Robles resident Justin Lee Ladd. Ladd was arrested for two felony warrants.

Sheriff’s office seeks assistance identifying car theft suspect

–The Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect believed to have burglarized six vehicles on May 26 at a parking area on TV Tower Road in San Luis Obispo.

The burglaries were reported to have happened between 9:30-11:30 a.m. The suspect broke car windows and stole property including wallets, riding equipment, and jewelry.

Surveillance photos have been obtained of the suspect using one of the stolen credit cards at an ATM. The Sheriff’s Office is asking that if anyone can identify this suspect, they contact the Sheriff’s Office at (805) 781-4550.

The Sheriff’s Office urges residents to take preventative steps to avoid becoming a victim of vehicle burglary. It is important to be mindful of what is left in vehicles, and avoid leaving valuables visible. It is recommended that you lock doors and windows, park in a well-lit area, and if your vehicle has an alarm be sure to activate it.
